The lobes of the cerebrum are actually divisions of the cerebral cortex based on the locations of the major gyri and sulci. The cerebral cortex is a highly convoluted gray matter structure consisting of many gyri and sulci. Although the cerebrum appears to be a uniform structure, it can actually be broken down into separate regions based on their embryological origins, structure and function.Įach hemisphere of the cerebrum is composed of the cerebral cortex and various structures that lie beneath it, also called subcortical structures. The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, and is divided into a left and right hemisphere. The brain is composed of the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. It is the most complex organ of the body, with many layers and components that play their roles in almost every function performed by the body. The brain, along with the spinal cord, is the main organ of the central nervous system.
